BENEFITS OF LISTENING TO HOLY QURAN

Listening to Qur'an recitation is the perfume of the souls, the calmer of hearts, and the food of the spirit. Is is one of the most important psychological medicines. It is a source of pleasure, even to some animals – and pleasure in moderation purifies inner energy, enhances the functioning of the faculties, slows down senile decay by driving out its diseases, improves the complexion, and refreshes the entire body. Pleasure in excess, on the other hand, makes the illnesses of the body grow worse.

Abu Nu’aim states, in his Tib an-Nabbi, that the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) said that the benefits of listening to recitation are increased when it is understood – that is, when its meaning is understood. Allah Himself says:

…so give good news to My slaves, those who listen to the word and then follow the best of it…(Qur’an: 39.17-18)

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF THE FIVE DAILY PRAYERS?

Praying five times a day is considered so important to Muslims that we call it one of the Five Pillars of Islam. In other words, along with the declaration of faith, fasting in Ramadan, paying of Zakat and going on pilgrimage once in one’s life to Makkah, prayer is considered essential if we are to call ourselves Muslims.

As with everything in Islam, there is a reason behind all the things we do. Sometimes, if we don’t understand these underlying reasons, many things can just appear as external rules and regulations. Modern men and women are not looking for extra burdens to put on their backs, so there is much more to praying than observing a regulation.

Contrary to what many people think, there is much more to prayer than just asking for things! Of course, we ask things of Almighty God, but we can also spend time thanking Him and praising Him. Indeed, the angels in heaven exist just to do this.

In the holy Quran we read:
{Most surely, in the remembrance of Allah do hearts find solace.}(13:28)

In the Call to Prayer (the Adhan), which is called from the mosque five times a day, the caller says these words: “Come to prayer. Come to Success.” In the Call for the Morning Prayer, he even adds the phrase, “Prayer is better than sleep.”

There is really nothing more beautiful in a Muslim country to wake up in the morning to hear Allah’s name being mentioned from every part of the city. Even for those who are the only Muslims in their town, though, the morning Call to Prayer reminds them just how beautiful a gift prayer really is.

Imagine an air-raid siren being sounded in time of war. People hear the siren and run as fast as they can to take cover from the bombs that would soon be falling on them.

The Adhan is like this air-raid siren, but instead of calling people to take shelter from bombs it is asking them to come to God Almighty and take shelter from the cares of this life. You see, prayer is not an escape from reality. It is an escape to reality. In prayer we can put all things in perspective and see what is really important in life.

When our foreheads are touching the ground in prayer we can’t fool anyone. Maybe in life we manage to fool others by the way we dress or by the words we use. Sometimes we even manage to fool ourselves. But Allah is not to be fooled. He not only created the heavens and the earth and everything in between, but He also knows every leaf that falls from every tree. This is why we can truly be ourselves in His presence when we pray.

For Muslims, praying is not a regulation. It is a gift.

So why five prayers, and why at certain set times during the day? You know, of all the Pillars of Islam, praying five times a day was revealed to Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) in heaven. At first, he was told that Muslims should pray fifty times, but Prophet Moses (peace be upon him) urged Muhammad to go back and say that this was too much.

Allah Almighty then said ten times, and again Moses (peace be upon him) persuaded Muhammad (peace be upon him) to plead that this was too much. Finally, Muhammad (peace be upon him) was told that Muslims must pray five times a day, and Allah added, “I have enforced My obligation and made it light for my servants. He who prays these five prayers will be rewarded as if he had prayed fifty. What I decree cannot be changed.” (Al-Bukhari)

The regulation of praying at certain set times is not just a random idea. The whole idea is to permeate the whole of one’s day with the remembrance of Allah. Some new Muslims say that they lead very busy lives and ask if it is OK to say all the five prayers together in the evening when they have more time.

It is precisely because we live busy lives that we must pray at certain times. The times are simple: when we get up, at noon, in the middle of the afternoon, in the early evening and at night. By praying at these set times we give a routine of prayer to our day. We wake up thinking of Allah and we spend the day interrupting all of our busyness to think of Him again.

So, if you are new to Islam is it easy to adjust to the routine of praying at five fixed times a day? Well, in my own case it certainly wasn’t easy and it took me some time to get used to it. So if at first you are not feeling all that uplifted by getting up to pray at four in the morning, stick with it. The routine itself will help you. By doing good things we become good people. The routine of prayer will make you a better Muslim.

A few simple tips might help. If you find it difficult to get up for the Dawn Prayer, then buy yourself a loud alarm clock, or even two or three, and have them so far out of your reach that you have to get up to turn them off! You might at first even get your telephone company to give you a wake-up call.

As well as an alarm clock, you can also get an alarm clock that will sound the call to Prayer five times a day. There are many Muslim bookshops that sell these and you could probably even get one online. This kind of clock is especially helpful if you live in a country where the Adhan is not called publicly. If that is not possible, set your mobile phone to vibrate and be reminded of the prayer times even while you are in the office!

A problem people sometimes have in prayer is that they are distracted and cannot concentrate. Well, it all depends on how well prepared we are. If we are going to our prayers straight from watching a football match or a sitcom on the TV, then our thoughts will not be on Allah alone. So we need to take time in preparing for prayer.

This, in fact, is what the Ablution gives us time to do. As we wash away the dirt that clings to our bodies, we prepare for the prayer to wash away the dirt that clings to our hearts and our lives.

So, for those new to Islam, setting off on a journey of prayer will bring great benefits. The greatest one of all is that it will help us to put our lives into perspective, seeing that all things come from Allah and that it is to Allah that all will return.

NINE GREAT BENEFITS OF RECITING THE QURAN

Indeed to reflect on Allah’s verses is a form of worship that will draw one close to Allah Most High. This reflection is not a reckless and wandering one, rather it includes a study of the classical tafseer of the verses being pondered over, as this would fulfil Ibnul-Qayyim’s great advice, “Such as reflecting over a book which a person has memorised and he expounds it so that he may understand what its author intends by it.”

Indeed the Book of Allah is not a book like any other, it is the timeless Speech of Allah, not a created thing, the study guide for life and death and what comes after. Therefore it deserves a more careful study than anyone else’s speech. It necessitates that its reader return to the early narrations of those who witnessed its revelation and heard its explanation by the one deputed by Allah to rehearse and explain His Words to humanity (sallallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam). For if one would try to ponder over the meanings of the verses without having done this study, then surely the filth of the time that he lives in and his ignorance of the correct application and understanding that the early Muslims had would cause him to understand some things not intended by Allah Most High, and therefore he would go astray, thinking to be worshipping Allah. So every sincere Muslim who hopes to earn Allah’s Love breciting and reflecting over Allah’s Book, then let him hold tight to the meanings explained by the Prophet (sallallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam), and those taught by the companions and their immediate followers, and the early scholars of Islam.

So dear brother and sister Muslim! Know that reciting and pondering over the Book of Allah, devoting your time regularly to its study and implementation has tremendous benefits in this life and the Next, so let us now look to just a few of them to attach ourselves more firmly to Allah’s Majestic Words. Each benefit stands as enough of an encouragement to shun any laziness we have and dedicate ourselves to the Qur’an.

1 - Reading and reflecting over the Qur’an fulfils an Islamic duty.

Indeed the Prophet (sallallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam) summarised this Religion with his statement: “The Religion is naseehah (sincerity)!” So then Tameem ibn Aws, may Allah be pleased with him, then said, “We asked, ‘To whom?’” He said: “To Allah, HIS BOOK, His Messenger, the leaders of the people, and their common folk.” [Muslim] The sincerity that is due to the Book of Allah includes its regular recitation, learning the rules of tajweed and reciting it beautifully, learning about its tafseer and the reasons for its revelation, affirming that it is the Truth, the perfect Speech of Allah and not part of the creation, honoring it and defending it, abiding by the orders and prohibitions found in it, teaching it and calling to it. [See Jaami’ul-’Uloom wal-Hikam of Ibn Rajab Al-Hambalee] So by reading and reflecting over the Qur’an, one fulfills an obligation and is rewarded for that. Upon fulfilling this obligation, the Qur’an then becomes a proof for him on the Day of Judgment! And that is our second benefit we will take by embracing this Noble Book...

2 - The Qur’an will be a proof for us on the Day of Judgment.

This is due to the statement of the Messenger: “And the Qur’an is a proof for you or against you.” [Muslim] So one of two things will occur with this proof, the Book of Allah. It will either be in your favor, a proof for you on the Day when you will need every single good deed, or it will be something standing against you, the very Speech of your Creator, a proof against you! Who could be saved from the terrors of that Day if Allah’s own Speech is against him?!?! Think carefully, dear Muslim brother or sister, about your position with the Qur’an! Are you neglecting it, contradicting it, being heedless of its orders and prohibitions, are you thinking deeply over it?! Will it be on your side on the Day of Judgment.?! O Allah! We ask you, by Your Glorious Speech and the rest of your beautiful Names and Attributes, to make the Qur’an a proof for us! O Allah! Don’t make the Qur’an a proof against us on that Day, and save us from the hellfire! For if Allah makes the Qur’an a proof in our favour on that Day, then it would also be an intercessor for us, when NO intercession will take place except by His Permission.

3 - The Qur’an will intercede for us on the Day of Judgment.

The proof: Aboo Umaamah relates that the Prophet (sallallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam) said: “Read the Qur’an, for verily it will come on the Day of Standing as an intercessor for its companions.” [Muslim]

4 - Your status in this life will be raised.

In Saheeh Muslim, we find a lovely story, about how a man from the people of Jannah, ‘Umar ibn Al-Khattaab, understood this principle. Some men came to question him during his khilaafah about the leadership of Makkah, they asked, “Who do you use to govern Makkah?” He said, “Ibn Abzaa.” They asked, “And who is Ibn Abzaa?” Umar replied, “A freed slave from those we freed.” They remarked, “You left a freed slave in charge of the people of the Valley (the noble tribes of the Quraysh)!?!?” So he answered them, “Verily he is a reader of the Book of Allah and is knowledgeable about the obligations of the Muslims. Haven’t you heard the statement of your Messenger: “Verily Allah raises some people by this Book and lowers others by it.”

5 - You will be from the best of the people.

‘Uthmaan, may Allah be pleased with him, said that the Prophet (sallallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam) said: “The best of you are the ones who learn the Qur’an and teach it to others” [Al-Bukhari]

6 - There are ten rewards for each letter you recite from the Qur’an.

As an authentic hadith in At-Tirmithee proves: “Whoever reads a letter from the Book of Allah, he will have a reward. And that reward will be multiplied by ten. I am not saying that “Alif, Laam, Meem” is a letter, rather I am saying that “Alif” is a letter, “laam” is a letter and “meem” is a letter.” So increase your recitation of the Qur’an to gain these merits, and to gain the following merit as well.

7 - The reciters of the Qur’an will be in the company of the noble and obedient angels.

‘Aa’ishah, may Allah be pleased with her, relates that the Prophet (sallallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam) said: “Verily the one who recites the Qur’an beautifully, smoothly, and precisely, he will be in the company of the noble and obedient angels. And as for the one who recites with difficulty, stammering or stumbling through its verses, then he will have TWICE that reward.” [Al-Bukhari and Muslim]

So dear brother or sister Muslim, do not let the Shaytaan give you false excuses, such as “I am not an ‘Arab,” or “Its not my language.” This hadith is a firm proof against these whisperings. Dedicate yourself to the Book of Allah, whether you are an ‘Arab or not! The excuses have been eliminated and the pathway has been cleared for you to embrace the Book of Allah without holding back or offering excuses! And surely you will not hesitate to seek a teacher or a study circle for the Qur’an once you hear the last and perhaps greatest benefits of reading and contemplating over the Qur’an...

8 - Your position in Paradise is determined by the amount of Qur’an you memorize in this life!

‘Abdullaah ibn ‘Amr ibn Al-’Aas heard the Prophet (sallallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam) saying: “It will be said to the companion of the Qur’an: Read and elevate (through the levels of the Paradise) and beautify your voice as you used to do when you were in the dunyaa! For verily, your position in the Paradise will be at the last verse you recite!” [Aboo Daawood and At-Tirmithee, saheeh]

9 - The Qur’an will lead you to Paradise!

The Prophet said: “The Qur’an is an intercessor, something given permission to intercede, and it is rightfully believed in. Whoever puts it in front of him, it will lead him to Paradise; whoever puts it behind him, it will steer him to the Hellfire.” [An authentic hadith found in At-Tabaraanee, on the authority of ‘Abdullaah ibn Mas’ood]

Know, dear brother or sister, that these nine benefits from the many benefits available can only be attained by a sincere commitment to the Book of Allah, not by a person’s mere statement, “I love the Qur’an, it’s beautiful.” Rather the heart must be sincerely attached to Allah’s Book and the limbs and tongue will follow in this attachment. You must know that we only mentioned a few of the numerous benefits of reading and reflecting over the Qur’an. There are many benefits that await your reading in the Qur’an and books of hadith, like the chapter of the Qur’an that will argue on your behalf in the grave, and that it is a physical healing, a source of rest and relaxation for your heart, among many other things. And Allah knows best.

HOW TO MAKE YOUR CHILDREN PERFORM SALAAH ON THEIR OWN WITHOUT REMINDING THEM

My Daughter was 12 years old and salaah was like a heavy burden on her. One day I told her to perform her salaah and I watched her go off. She took her musalla and threw it on the ground. I asked her if she read her salaah and she replied, “yes.” I was devastated as I knew she was lying to me. I watched her closely and knew that she hadn’t performed her salaah. Believe me, without feeling I slapped her across her face. I know I shouldn’t have reacted with aggression but I was upset with her attitude. The situation has troubled me and I cried and I repented to Allah Ta’ala to forgive me. The slap, the talks, the reminders, all did not benefit my child in the least.

One day, one of my friends told me that she once went to visit one of her friends. Her friend was not very pious, but when the azaan was called out, she noticed her children rushing for salaah without any reminders or quarrels.

Quite shocked at what I saw, I asked her how her children perform salaah on their own without quarreling or a reminding them. She said to me, “My secret is that before I got married I make this Dua daily until today.

After she advised me to also read this dua, I also began reciting it daily. My Sisters and Brothers! Since I began to recite this dua, my daughter is now the first to perform her salaah without any reminders or quarrels. She gets up for Fajr Salaah without any alarms. Her brothers are now also eager to perform salaah without any difficulties. In fact now we have to ask her to wake us up for salaah.

I know You are now eager to know what dua this is.

This dua is in Surah Ibraheem [14], ayah # 40

O my Lord! make me one who establishes regular Prayer, and also (raise such) among my offspring O our Lord! and accept Thou my Prayer. "Rabbi-Ajal'ni muqeema salaati, wa min Dhurriyyati, rabbana wataqabbal duaa"

Start today, do not wait until you get married and until you have kids - "prevention is better than cure."

RECITATIONS WHICH MAKES SHAYTAAN FLEE

Here follows a few duaas, when read at appropriate times, gives one protection from shaytaan:

We should take some courage and learn them. Recite them for our own protection and the protection of our families.

1. When you say: La ilaha il-Allah - wahdahu laa shareeka lahu-lahul-mulku wa lahul-hamdu - wa huwa 'ala kulli shay'in qadeer. [There is none worthy of worship except Allah alone. He has no partners. To Him belongs the Dominion, to Him belongs all praise and He is capable over all things] a hundred times a day.

The evidence is what has been reported in the Saheeh of al Bukhaari and Muslim from Abu Hurayrah (R.A.) that Allah's Messenger Sall-Allahu alayhi wa sallam mentioned the above words and then said: "He will receive the reward of setting free ten slaves, a hundred good deeds will be written for him and a hundred bad deeds will be erased from him. It will be a sanctuary from Shaytaan for him on that day until he reaches the evening. No one will come with something better except one who increases beyond that".

2. Recitation of Ayaat ul-Kursi (Surah Al Baqarah 2:255) when you go to bed.

Abu Hurayrah (R.A.) reported that the Messenger Sall-Allahu alayhi wa sallam put him in charge of guarding the zakaah of Ramadan and someone would come and take handfuls from the zakaah for two nights in succession. On the third night, he (Abu Hurayrah) grabbed him and said: "I will take you to Allah's Messenger Sall-Allahu alayhi wa sallam ". He (the thief) said: "Leave me alone and I will teach you some words by which Allah Subhanahu wa Ta'ala will benefit you". He then said, "When you depart to go to your bed recite aayaat ul-Kursi until you complete it. There will never cease to be from Allah Subhanahu wa Ta'ala a guardian to protect you and Shaytaan will not approach you until you wake up". When he explained this to Allah's Messenger Sall-Allahu alayhi wa sallam , he said, "He has told you the truth although the is a great liar". (al-Bukhaari).

3. When you spit on your left three times and seek refuge in Allah from the evil of what you see in a dream.

Abu Salamah bin 'Abdur-Rahman said: "I heard Abu Qataadah ibn Rab'iyy say:

"I heard Allah's Messenger Sall-Allahu alayhi wa sallam say, "The good dream is from Allah and the bad dream is from Shaytaan. When one of you sees what he dislikes, let him spit on his left three times when he awakens and let him seek refuge in Allah Subhanahu wa Ta'ala from its evil and then it will not harm him"". Abu Salamah said, "I used to see in my dream that which wouldbe more burdensome to me than a mountain and when I heard this hadeeth I considered it as nothing." In another narration he said, "I used to see in my dream which would make me concerned until I heard Abu Qataadah say: "I used to have dreams which would make me ill until I heard Allah's Messenger Sall-Allahu alayhi wa sallam say, "The righteous dream is from Allah. If one of you sees what he loves then let him not inform anyone about it except one whom he loves. And if he sees what he dislikes, let him not inform anyone about it. Let him spit on his left three times and let him seek refuge in Allah from Shaytaan, the accursed from the evil of what he saw and it will not harm him.""

4. Upon saying, when leaving the house "Bismillah tawakaltu 'ala Allah, la hawla wa la quwata illaa bilLah" [In the Name of Allah, I place my trust upon Allah, There is no power nor movement except by Allah].

Anas (R.A.) reports that Allah's Messenger Sall-Allahu alayhi wa sallam said, "Whoever says (when he leaves his house): "In the Name of Allah, I place my trust upon Allah, There is no power nor movement except by Allah" it is said to him: "You have been sufficed, you have been protected and you have been guided". Then one of the devils turns to another and says, "How can you get to a man who has been sufficed, protected and guided". (Abu Dawud, at-Tirmidhi, hasan saheeh).

Umm Salamah (R.A.) said, "Allah's Messenger Sall-Allahu alayhi wa sallam never left my house except that he raised his sight to the sky and said, "Allahumma innee a'oodhu bika an adil aw udal, aw azil aw uzal, aw azlima aw uslam, aw ajhal aw yujhal 'aleeyy (O Allah I seek refuge in you from leading others astray and being led astray, from causing others to slip and being made to slip, from oppressing others or being oppressed and from making others ignorant, and being kept ignorant."" (at-Tirmidhi,

Abu Dawood, an-Nasa'ee, Ibn Majah. at-Tirmidhi said "hasan saheeh", al-Albaani agreed with him in al-Kalim ut-Tayyib, no.59).

************************

5. Remembering Allah Subhanahu wa Ta'ala, the Sublime and Exalted when entering the house and before eating.

Jaabir (R.A.) said: "I heard the Prophet Sall-Allahu alayhi wa sallam say: "When a man enters his house and remembers Allah the Exalted upon entering and before eating, Shaytaan says: "There is no place for you to spend the night and there is no supper for you." When he enters the house and does not remember Allah, Shaytaan says: "You have found a place to spend the night" and when he does not remember Allah upon eating his food, Shaytaan says: "You have found a place to stay and some supper"". (Muslim).

************************

6. When entering the Masjid: Say "A'oodhu bilLahil-'adheem wa bi wajhil-kareemi wa bi sultaanihil-qadeemi min ash-Shaytaani-rajeem" [I seek refuge with Allah the Mighty, with His Noble Face and with His Eternal Authority from Shaytaan, the Accursed]

'Abdullah ibn 'Umar (R.A.) said, "When the Prophet Sall-Allahu alayhi wa sallam used to enter the mosque he would say, "I seek refuge with Allah the Mighty, with His Noble Face and with His Eternal Authority from Shaytaan, the Accursed". He then said, "When (a man) says this, Shaytaan says: "He has been protected from me for the whole day"". (Abu Dawud, al-Albaani declared it saheeh in Saheeh Abu Dawood, no. 458, and an-Nawawee and Ibn Hajr declared it hasan).

************************

7. Upon pronouncing the Adhaan.

This is due to what has been reported from Abu Hurayrah (R.A.) that Allah's Messenger Sall-Allahu alayhi wa sallam said, "When the call to prayer is made, Shaytaan flees on his heels and passes wind with noise during his flight so that he does not hear the adhaan. When the adhaan is completed he comes back. When the iqaamah is pronounced he takes to his heels again until it is completed. Then he returns again and whispers into the heart of the praying person and says to him: "Remember this and remember that". So the person remembers those things which were not in his mind before the prayer began and as a result, he forgets how much he has prayed". (Al-Bukhaari, Muslim).

Pronouncing the adhaan can be done at any time to repel Shaytaan. This is due to what has been reported by Muslim from Abu Saheel bin Abu Saalih who said: "My father sent me to Bani Harithah and there was a young boy with me. Someone called him by his name from a wall, so he went to have a look at the wall but did not see anything". I mentioned that to my father and he said: "If I had known that you would encounter this I would not have sent you". However, when you hear a voice then make the call for prayer since I heard Abu Hurayrah (R.A.) saying the Prophet (saw) said, "When the call for prayer is made, Shaytaan flees".

************************

8. When you say "A'oodhu billah minka, al'anuka bi l'anatillaah" [I seek refuge in Allah from you, I curse you with the curse of Allah] three times..

Abu Dardaa' (R.A.) reports that "Allah's Messenger Sall-Allahu alayhi wa sallam stood for prayer and we heard him saying, "I seek refuge in Allah from you". Then he said, "I curse you with the curse of Allah" three times. At the same time, he was stretching out his hand, trying to grab hold of something. When he finished his prayer we said to him: "O Messenger of Allah! We heard you say something in the prayer which we have never heard from you before and we saw you stretching out your hand". He said, "That was the enemy of Allah, Iblees".

He came with a flame of fire and tried to throw it in my face. I said, "I seek refuge in Allah from you" three times and then (I said), "I curse you with the curse of Allah" three times and he did not hesitate. Then I desired to capture him. By Allah! If it had not been for the supplication of our brother (the Prophet) Sulaymaan, he would have been tied up and the children of Madinah would have played about with him"". (Muslim).

In another hadeeth from 'Uthmaan bin Abul-Aas (R.A.) who said, "I said, "O Messenger of Allaah! Shaytaan comes in between me and my prayer and my recitation, confusing me." He said, "That is a Shaytaan called Khunzub. When you feel his presence, seek refuge in Allah from him and spit on your left three times." I did as he said and Allah took that (distraction) away fromme." (Muslim)

************************

9. When the servant finds something in his soul that concerns him and says "huwal-awwalu wal-aakhiru wadh-dhaahiru wal-

baatinu wa huwa bi kulli shay'in 'aleem"  {He is the First and the Last, the Outermost and the Innermost, and He has Knowledge of every single thing.].  Abu Zameel (R.A.) said, "I said to Ibn 'Abbas (R.A.), "What is this thing which I find in my soul?" - meaning doubt. He said, "When you find something like that in your soul, then say, "He (Allah) is the First and the Last, the Outermost and the Innermost and He has knowledge of every single thing."" (Abu Dawood, al-Albaani declared it hasan in al-Kalim ut-Tayyib no.135).

************************

10. When a calamity befalls you and you say "QadrAllahu wa ma sha' Allahu fa'ala" {Allah has decreed (this) and He does whatever He wills].

Abu Hurayrah (R.A.) reports that Allaah's Messenger Sall-Allahu alayhi wa sallam said, "The strong believer is more loved by Allah than the weak believer, but in both there is good. Be zealous for what will benefit you. Seek help from Allah the Mighty and Majestic and do not become incapacitated. If something afflicts you, do not say: "If only I had done such and such" but say, "Allah hasdecreed (this) and He does whatever He wills". Indeed saying "if.." opens up the doorway of Shaytaan's handiwork." (Muslim).

************************

11. When approaching your wife before sexual relations. When you say "Bismillah, Allahumma janibna ash-Shaytaan wa janibish-Shaytaana maa razaqtna" (in the Name of Allah), O Allah! Make us distant from Shaytaan and make Shaytaan distant from what you bestow upon us".

Ibn 'Abbaas (R.A.) reports that the Prophet Sall-Allahu alayhi wa sallam said, "If one of you says, when approaching his wife (for intercourse): "In the Name of Allah. O Allah! Make us distant from Shaytaan and make Shaytaan distant from what you bestow upon us" and offspring is decreed for you, Shaytaan will never be able to harm it (i.e. the offspring)". (Al-Bukhaari, Muslim).

************************

12. When you say in a state of anger "A'oodhu bilLaahi min ash-Shaytaan ir-Rajeem" {I seek refuge with Allah from Shaytaan the Accursed}.

Sulaymaan bin Sard (R.A.) said, "I was sitting with Allah's Messenger Sall-Allahu alayhi wa sallam and two men were abusing each other. The face of one of them had become red (out of anger) and his veins had become inflated. Allah's Messenger Sall- Allahu alayhi wa sallam said, "I know a word which, if he was to say, his anger would leave him. If he said: "I seek refuge in Allah from Shaytaan the Accursed", his anger would leave him"" (al-Bukhaari, Muslim).

************************

13. Upon saying "Bismillah" [in the Name of Allah]

Abul-Maleeh (R.A.) reports that a man said, "I was behind the Messenger Sall-Allahu alayhi wa sallam and his riding animal stumbled. I said, "May Shaytaan perish", and he said, "Do not say, "May Shaytaan perish". If you say that he will grow in size until he becomes the size of a house and says, "By my strength". Instead say, "Bismillah" (In the Name of Allah). When you say that, he reduces in size until he is like a fly." (Abu Dawood, saheeh isnad).

************************

14. When you supplicate for blessings for something which wins your admiration.

Allah's Messenger Sall-Allahu alayhi wa sallam said, "When one of you sees something in his self or in his possessions which amazes him (or wins his admiration) he should invoke blessings upon it as the (evil) eye is indeed true and real".

************************

15. When you recite the M'uwadhdhataan [Surah al-Falaq and Surah an-Naas].

Abu Sa'eed (R.A.) said, "Allah's Messenger Sall-Allahu alayhi wa sallam used to seek refuge from the jinn and from the effects of  the (evil) of men until the m'uwwadhdhataan were revealed. When they were revealed he clung to them and abandoned what was besides them." (at-Tirmidhi, hasan; an-Nasa'ee and Ibn Maajah - saheeh).

He said, " Allaah and His Rasul know best". Rasulallah repeated this statement very often. Hadhrat Ali (Radiahallahu Anhu) stated, "Ayatul Kursi". Nabi (Sallallahu alayhi wasallam) said:"Oh Abul Munzar (family name of Abi bin Kaab). May you be blessed by this knowledge. 2) Hadhrat Ali (Radiahallahu Anhu) states that there was a room of dates, which he used to guard. He suspected that some dates were going missing. Thus one night he stood vigil and saw an animal like a young person. Hadhrat Ali (Radiahallahu Anhu) said: "I greeted and received a reply". I asked," Who are you? Man or Jinn?" It said, "Jinn. I said, Give me your hand". He outstretched his hand. I noticed that the hand was like that of a dog. Its hair like the hair of the dog. I asked, "Are Jinns created like this?" It said, " the Jinns know there are amongst them more stronger ones". I enquired," Why did you steal?". He replied," I have come to know that you love to give charity so I decided to take a part also." Hadhrat Ali (Radiahallahu Anhu) said: " Who will save us from your evil? It said, Aayatul Kursi which is in Surah Baqarah. He who reads it at night will be saved from our evil till the morning and he who reads it in the morning will be saved from our evil till the night."

In the morning Hadhrat Ali (Radiahallahu Anhu) came to Nabi (Sallallahu alayhi wasallam) and narrated the entire event to him. Nabi (Sallallahu alayhi wasallam) said,"That rascal has stated the truth although he is a great liar."

Allaah says ," I have given you such status, whosoever from amongst my servants recites you after every Salaat, his resting place will be Jannat. The jinn asked him, "Can you drop me down?, If you do so then I will teach you such an Ayat that if you recite it upon entering your home, Satan will not enter." They wrestled and the person dropped the Jinn down. The jinn said:"Read Ayatul Kursi, because that person who recites it upon entering the home, Shaitaan flees like a donkey making a sound from its posterior runs away.

A person mentioned to Hadhrat Ibn Masood that the person (who dropped the Jinn) could only be Hadhrat Umar (Radiahallahu Anhu).

Hadhrat Abu Hurairah (Radiahallahu Anhu) narrates this (above) Hadith from Rasulallaah (Sallallahu alayhi wasallam), with the addition that there is an Ayat in Surah Baqara, which is the chief ayat of the Qur'aan. Whosoever recites it in a house wherein Shaitaan is, he (Shaitaan) will leave.

All remained silent. "Hadhrat Ibn Masood (Radiahallahu Anhu) said,"I heard Rasulallaah (Sallallahu alayhi wasallam) say from the Mimbar (pulpit) that Aayatul Kursi is the Loftiest in the Qur'aan, and the Ayat which encourages justice and fairness is ( Arabic P12) and the Ayat that creates the most fear is ( Arabic P12) of the Ayat that creates the most hope of mercy is ( Arabic P12).

23) Hadhrat Ali (Radiahallahu Anhu) says that I cannot comprehend that a person who is a born Muslim, or intelligent or one who accepted Islaam in a rational (Arabic) state spending the night without reciting Ayatul Kursi. If you know how lofty this is (you will never discard it), it has been given to your Nabi (Sallallahu alayhi wasallam) from under the treasures of the arsh. It has not been given to any Nabi (Sallallahu alayhi wasallam) before your Nabi (Sallallahu alayhi wasallam) and I have never spent a night without reciting this Ayat thrice. I recite it in the last 2 Rakaats of Witr after Esha and also when I retire to my sleeping place

24) Hadhrat Auf bin Maalik (Radiahallahu Anhu) says that Hadhrat Abu Zar (Radiahallahu Anhu) who was sitting near Rasulallaah (Sallallahu alayhi wasallam) asked: "Oh Rasulallaah (Sallallahu alayhi wasallam) which is the most lofty Ayat Allaah revealed to you?" Allaah's Rasul recited Ayatul Kursi.

Hadhrat Ma'aaz bin Jabal (Radiahallahu Anhu) says that he stored the dates for charity of Nabi (Sallallahu alayhi wasallam) in a room for safe keeping. I sensed that there was a shortage daily therein. I complained to Rasulallaah (Sallallahu alayhi wasallam) about this. He said that this was the work of Satan and I must stay alert for him. Thus I sat in the barn that night. When some part of the night passed, Shaitaan came in the shape of an elephant. When he came near the door, he changed his shape and entered through one of the holes of the door, moved towards the dates and began eating. I dragged my cloth near him and said: "I testify that there is no one worthy of worship but Allaah and that Muhammad is his Servant and Rasul. Oh Allaah's enemy you are usurping the dates of charity whereas the poor are more deserving of this than you. I will definitely apprehend you and take you to Rasulallaah (Sallallahu alayhi wasallam) who will humiliate you." At this Shaitaan pledged that he will not do this act again.

In the morning I came to Rasulallaah (Sallallahu alayhi wasallam) who asked me about my prisoner. I stated that he had vowed not to steal again. Nabi (Sallallahu alayhi wasallam) said that he (Satan) will come again so be alert. The next night also I sat alert. The same thing occurred and once again he (Satan) pledged not to steal. I left him. In the morning, I narrated the whole event to Nabi (Sallallahu alayhi wasallam) who said that he (Satan) will come again. On the third night the same thing happened once again. I apprehended him and this time I said,"Oh Allaah's enemy, you have pledged twice and this is the third time (now I will not leave you). He (Satan) said," I have children and have come from Nasabeen ( a place between Masool and Syria). If I receive anything less in status than this (dates), then I would not have come here. We left this city of yours when your Nabi (Sallallahu alayhi wasallam) was sent together with two Ayats which removed us from here to Nasabeen. Shaitaan does not enter any home when these two Ayats have been recited in it". He said this thrice. "If you leave me, I will show you these two Ayats". I agreed. He said," Ayatul Kursi and the last Ayat of Surah Baqarah (Amanas Rasul....)."Thus I let him go. In the morning I came to Rasulallaah (Sallallahu alayhi wasallam) and told him what had transpired. Nabi (Sallallahu alayhi wasallam) said, "That rascal has spoken the truth even though he is a liar."

Hadhrat Ma'aaz (Radiahallahu Anhu) says after that he used to recite this and blow on the dates and there were no shortages in the room.

26) Hadhrat Abu Asaad Saeedee (Radiahallahu Anhu) narrates that he plucked the fruits from his orchard and kept them in a room. Jinnaat used used to come to this room and steal the fruit. Oh Abu Asaad, listen attentively, when he (the Jinn) has entered, then say. "I take the name of Allaah" and say "accept Rasulallaah (Sallallahu alayhi wasallam) sayings". The Jinn said, "Oh Abu Asaad, do not take me to Rasulallaah (Sallallahu alayhi wasallam). I vow by Allaah that I will not set foot in your home, nor steal your fruit. Also I will show you such an Ayat that if you recite it on your house then you will think I have died. If you read it on your utensils then no one will be able open its lid." I promised to leave him. He became happy and said. " The Ayat, is Ayatul Kursi. This Sahabi came to Nabi (Sallallahu alayhi wasallam) and related the entire event to him, upon which Nabi (Sallallahu alayhi wasallam) said: " He (Jinn) spoke the truth although he is (normally)a liar."

27) Hadhrat Abu Amama Sadi bin Ijlaan (Radiahallahu Anhu) says that Nabi (Sallallahu alayhi wasallam) said," Whosoever recites Ayatul Kursi after every fard Salaat, the only thing preventing his entry into Janaat is death.

Surah Baqarah, Al-Imraan and Ta Haa. Hadhrat Abu Amama (Radiahallahu Anhu) says that he searched for it and found it in Ayatul Kursi of Surah Baqarah, and "La illaha illah Huwal haya ....." in Al-Imraan and "Wa Anatil wujuhu....." in Surah Ta Haa.

Thus when he comes, tell him that Nabi (Sallallahu alayhi wasallam) said that he should not come back. The Jinn said, "Oh, Abu Ayoob leave me this time, by Allaah I will definitely never return. Thus Abu Ayoob left him and came to Nabi (Sallallahu alayhi wasallam) and narrated the event. This event occurred twice. On the third occasion the Jinn said, "Shall I reveal to you such words, which when recited at night will prevent Shaitaan from coming near your house that night and day and the next day. Abu Ayoob said, "Sure". The Jinn said,"Recite Ayatul Kursi". When the Jinn came, Abu Ayoob (Radiahallahu Anhu) told him this, and the Jinn pledged not to come again. Abu Ayoob left him. Abu Ayoob came to Nabi (Sallallahu alayhi wasallam) who asked him how was his thief. Abu Ayoob replied, "I caught him but left him after he pledged that he will not return". Nabi (Sallallahu alayhi wasallam) stated that he (the Jinn) will definitely return. Abu Ayoob apprehended the Jinn twice or thrice and each time he released him on the pledge of not returning. Abu Ayoob came to Nabi (Sallallahu alayhi wasallam) who asked him about his prisoner. Abu Ayoob replied," I caught him but released him on the pledge that he will not return. Nabi (Sallallahu alayhi wasallam) stated that he(the Jinn) will surely return. Abu Ayoob thereafter apprehended the Jinn who said ,"If you leave me, I will show such a thing, that when read, the Shaitaan will not come near you. That is Ayatul Kursi". Abu Ayoob narrated this entire event to Nabi (Sallallahu alayhi wasallam) who said,"The Jinn has spoken the truth although he is (normally) a great liar.

In the tradition of Tabrani it is stated "My dates were kept in a room.". Nabi (Sallallahu alayhi wasallam) said,"Tomorrow you will find a cat therein then it will become a wolf." At the end of the tradition it is stated, "Satan said that whenever he hears it ( Ayatul Kursi) he will runaway. Via another chain of narrations it is stated in Tabrani. In the morning Rasulallaah (Sallallahu alayhi wasallam) asked , "What did your prisoner do last night.?" I (Abu Huraira) said, He spoke of his great need and family for which I felt pity on him and left him." Nabi (Sallallahu alayhi wasallam) said,"He has spoken a lie and will definitely come again." I (Abu harraira) understood that the (the thief) will definitely come again because Nabi (Sallallahu alayhi wasallam) said so. Thus I kept watch at that same barn. He (the thief) came and began stealing in handfuls. I caught him and threatened to take him to Rasulallaah (Sallallahu alayhi wasallam). The thief pleaded with me to leave him as he was needy and had a family and that he will not repeat this. I (Abu Huraiah) felt pity and left him. In the morning Rasulallaah (Sallallahu alayhi wasallam) asked him the same question as before and his answer was the same. When the same thing happened for the third time, Abu Hurairah said to the thief,"This is the third time. Each time you say that you will not steal again and each time you steal again." The thief said,"Leave me, and I will teach you such words through which Allaah will benefit you.". I (Abu Huraira) inquired about those words and the thief said,"When you go to your sleeping place, then recite Ayatul Kursi completely. Allaah will stipulate a guardian for you and Shaitaan will not come near you until the morning. I released him. In the morning Rasulallaah (Sallallahu alayhi wasallam) asked,"What did your thief do last night?" Abu Hurairah narrated what had transpired. The Sahabah were most enthusiastic to gain virtues. Nabi (Sallallahu alayhi wasallam) said,"He has spoken the truth although he is a liar. Oh Abu Huraira, do you know with whom you were talking to for the past three nights." I said "No". She said that she had a family and swore on oath that she will not do so again. I released her. I came to Rasulallaah (Sallallahu alayhi wasallam) and informed him about this. He said that she was a liar. When the same thing happened on the second night, she (the female jinn) asked me to release her. She said,"I will, in exchange teach you such a duaa that from amongst us none will ever come near your crops. When you retire to your sleeping place then read and blow Ayatul Kursi on your goods. When on third of the night passed, he fell on his knees but stood up immediately. During the latter part of the night, sleep overcame him and the glasses fell and broke. Allaah Jala Shanahu said, "Oh Musa, if I sleep then the sky will fall on the earth and destroy it just as the two glasses fell from your hands and broke. " Then Allaah Ta'aala revealed unto Nabi (Sallallahu alayhi wasallam) Ayatul Kursi.

7. Blowing it upon food and drink brings blessings and abundance.

8. It is greater than the skies, earth, Jannat and Jahannam.

9. Whosoever reads it upon entering the home, Satan runs away from there.

10. The reciter, his children, home, wealth, property and the homes of his neighbours are safe.

11. Whosoever reads it together with the last Ayats of Surah Baqarah, Shaitaan does not enter his home for three days.

12. The Jinnaat cannot open any utensil upon which it is read.

13. In it is the Ism Azam.

14. The thief does not come near it's reciter.

15. When recited with the last Ayat of Surah Baqarah then the plea of the reciter will not go unattended.

16. When reciting it whilst retiring to one's sleeping place, one is protected until the morning. Two angels are deputed to protect him.

17. Whosoever recites it after every fard Salaat, will be rewarded with a grateful heart, a remembering tongue, the reward of being martyred in the path of Allaah, and will also be rewarded like the Siddiques.

18. Who reads it and "Inna Rabba bi kum Allaah.." and the last two Quls for a women on delivery, then the delivery becomes easy.

19. When one reads it and blows on his possessions and goods, then Shaitaan will not come near.

20. Whosoever reads Ayatul Kursi and the beginning of Surah Ghafir in the morning then he will be protected and be safe from the morning until the evening and vice versa. Subahaanallaah!.

NINE GREAT BENEFITS OF READING THE QURAN

Nine Great Benefits of Reading and Reflecting Over the Qur'aan

In the Name of Allaah, the Most Merciful, may His Salaahand Salaam be upon His last Messenger Muhammad, to proceed:

Indeed the Book of Allaah is not a book like any other, it is the timeless Speech of Allaah, not a created thing, a study guide for life and death and what comes after. Therefore it deserves a more careful study than anyone else's speech. It necessitates that its reader return to the early narrations of those who witnessed its revelation and heard its explanation by the one deputed by Allaah to rehearse and explain His Words to humanity (sallallaahu 'alayhe wa sallam). For if one would try to ponder over the meanings of the verses without having done this study, then surely the filth of the time that he lives in and his ignorance of the correct application and understanding that the early Muslims had would cause him to understand some things not intended by Allaah Most High, and therefore he would go astray, thinking to be worshipping Allaah.

So every sincere Muslim who hopes to earn Allaah's Love by reciting and reflecting over Allaah's Book, then let him hold tight to the meanings explained by the Prophet (sallallaahu 'alayhe wa sallam), and those taught by the Companions and their immediate followers, and the early scholars of Islaam.

Know that reciting and pondering over the Book of Allaah, devoting your time regularly to its study and implementation has tremendous benefits in this life and the Next, so let us now look to just a few of them to attach ourselves more firmly to Allaah's Majestic Words. Each benefit stands as enough of an encouragement on its own for us to shun any laziness we have and dedicate ourselves to the Qur'aan properly.

1 - Reading and reflecting over the Qur'aan fulfills an Islaamic duty

Indeed the Prophet (sallallaahu 'alayhe wa sallam) summarized this Religion with his statement:

"The Religion is naseehah (sincerity)!"

So then Tameem ibn Aws (may Allaah be pleased with him) then said, "We asked, 'To whom?'" He (sallallaahu 'alayhe wa sallam) replied:

"To Allaah, HIS BOOK, His Messenger, the leaders of the people, and their common folk." [2]

The sincerity that is due to the Book of Allaah, as Ibn Rajab Al-Hambalee said, includes having a strong love for it, honoring it and extolling its great status, affirming that it is the Speech of Allaah, seeking to understand its meanings, acting by it, following the orders found in it, spreading its correct understanding, continually studying it, and taking on the good manners that are encouraged in it. [3]

So by reading and reflecting over the Qur'aan, one fulfills an obligation and is rewarded for that. Upon fulfilling this obligation, the Qur'aan then becomes a proof for him on the Day of Judgement! And that is our second benefit we will take by embracing this Noble Book...

2 - The Qur'aan will be a proof for us on the Day of Judgement

This is due to the statement of the Messenger:

"...and the Qur'aan is a proof for you or against you..." [4]

So one of two things will occur with this proof, the Book of Allaah. It will either be in your favor, a proof for you on the Day when you will need every single good deed, or it will be something standing against you, the very Speech of your Creator, a proof against you! Who could be saved from the terrors of that Day if Allaah's own Speech is against him?!?!

Think carefully, dear Muslim brother or sister, about your position with the Qur'aan! Are you neglecting it, contradicting it, being heedless of its orders and prohibitions, are you thinking deeply over it?! Will it be on your side on the Day of Judgement?!

O Allaah! We ask you, by Your Glorious Speech and the rest of Your beautiful Names and Attributes, to make the Qur'aan a proof for us! O Allaah! Don't make the Qur'aan a proof against us on that Day, and save us from the hellfire!

For if Allaah makes the Qur'aan a proof in our favor on that Day, then it would also be an intercessor for us, when NO intercession will take place except by His Permission.

3 - The Qur'aan will intercede for us on the Day of Judgement

The proof: Aboo Umaamah relates that the Prophet (sallallaahu 'alayhe wa sallam) said:

"Read the Qur'aan, for verily it will come on the Day of Standing as an intercessor for its companions." [5]

4 - Your status in this life will be raised

In Saheeh Muslim, we find a lovely story, about how a man from the promised people of Jannah, 'Umar ibn Al-Khattaab, and his deputy over Makkah understood this.

On the authority of 'Aamir ibn Waathilah, he said that Naafi' ibn 'Abdil-Haarith met up with 'Umar (ibn Al-Khattaab) at (a place called) 'Usfaan. 'Umar used to put him (Naafi') to work (to govern) over Makkah.

So he ('Umar) said, "Who have you put to work (to govern) over the people of the Valley (Makkah)?"

He (Naafi') said, "Ibn Abzaa."

He ('Umar) said, "Who is Ibn Abzaa?"

He (Naafi') said, "One of our freed slaves."

He ('Umar) said, "So you have put a freed slave in charge of them?"

He (Naafi') said, "Verily he is a recitor of the Book of Allaah, the Mighty and Majestic, and verily he is knowledgeable of the laws of inheritance."

'Umar said, "Verily your Prophet (sallallaahu 'alayhe wa sallam) had said:

"Verily Allaah raises some people by way of this Book and lowers others by it." [6]

5 - You will be from the best of the people

'Uthmaan (may Allaah be pleased with him), the thirdkhaleefah and fourth most virtuous person on earth after the Prophet (sallallaahu 'alayhe wa sallam), Aboo Bakr, and 'Umar, said that the Prophet (sallallaahu 'alayhe wa sallam) said:

"The best of you are the ones who learn the Qur'aan and teach it to others" [7]

6 - There are ten rewards for each letter you recite from the Qur'aan

As an authentic hadeeth in Sunan At-Tirmithee proves:

"Whoever reads a letter from the Book of Allaah, he will have a reward. And that reward will be multiplied by ten. I am not saying that "Alif, Laam, Meem" is a letter, rather I am saying that "Alif" is a letter, "laam"is a letter, and "meem" is a letter." [8]

So increase your recitation of the Qur'aan to gain these merits, and to gain the following merit as well...

7 - The recitors of the Qur'aan will be in the company of the noble and obedient angels

'Aa'ishah (may Allaah be pleased with her), the Prophet's beloved wife who held his head in her lap as he took his last blessed breaths, relates that the Prophet (sallallaahu 'alayhe wa sallam) said:

"Verily the one who recites the Qur'aan beautifully, smoothly, and precisely, he will be in the company of the noble and obedient angels. And as for the one who recites with difficulty, stammering or stumbling through its verses, then he will have TWICE that reward." [9]

So do not let the Shaytaan give you false excuses, such as "I am not an 'Arab," or "Its not my language." This hadeeth is a firm proof against these whisperings. Dedicate yourself to the Book of Allaah, whether you are an 'Arab or not! The excuses have been eliminated and the pathway has been cleared for you to embrace the Book of Allaah without holding back or offering excuses!

And surely you will not hesitate to seek a teacher or a study circle for the Qur'aan once you hear the last and perhaps greatest benefits of reading and contemplating over the Qur'aan...

8 - The Qur'aan will lead you to Paradise

The Prophet (sallallaahu 'alayhe wa sallam) said:

"The Qur'aan is an intercessor, something given permission to intercede, and it is rightfully believed in. Whoever puts it in front of him, it will lead him to Paradise; Whoever puts it behind him, it will steer him to the Hellfire." [10]

9 - Your position in Paradise is determined by the amount of Qur'aan you memorize in this life

'Abdullaah ibn 'Amr ibn Al-'Aas heard the Prophet (sallallaahu 'alayhe wa sallam) saying:

"It will be said to the companion of the Qur'aan: Read and elevate (up through the levels of the Paradise) and beautify your voice as you used to do when you were in the dunyaa! For verily, your position in the Paradise will be at the last verse you recite!" [11]

Know that these nine benefits, from the many benefits available, can only be attained by a sincere commitment to the Book of Allaah, not by a person's mere statement,"I love the Qur'aan, it's beautiful." Rather the heart must be sincerely attached to Allaah's Book and the limbs and tongue will follow in this attachment.

You must know that only a few of the numerous benefits of reading and reflecting over the Qur'aan have been mentioned here. There are many benefits that await your reading in the Qur'aan and books of hadeeth, like the chapter of the Qur'aan that will argue on your behalf in the grave, and that it is a physical healing, a source of rest and relaxation for your heart, among many other things.

And Allaah knows best.

THE DATE AND IT'S USES AS MENTIONED IN THE QURAN

In a number of Qur'anic verses, the humble date is honoured as one of the blessings of Paradise. (Qur'an, 55:68) When this fruit is examined, it can be seen to have a great many important features. One of the oldest known species of plant, the date is today a food of preference not only for its delicious taste but also for its nutritious properties. New benefits imparted by the date are being discovered every day and has come to be used as a medicine as well as a food. These features of the date are noted in Surah Maryam:

The pains of labour drove her to the trunk of a date-palm. She [Maryam] said, "Oh if only I had died before this time and was something discarded and forgotten!" A voice called out to her from under her, "Do not grieve! Your Lord has placed a small stream at your feet. Shake the trunk of the palm towards you and fresh, ripe dates will drop down onto you. Eat and drink and delight your eyes…" (Qur'an, 19:23-26)

There is considerable wisdom in the way that Allah recommends Maryam to eat this fruit. The date is an excellent choice of food for the pregnant women and for those who have just given birth. This is a widely accepted scientific fact. Maryam was inspired to understand this point, in order to make her own labour easier. The date has one of the highest sugar levels, 60-65%, of all fruits. Doctors recommend that pregnant women be given foods containing fruit sugar on the day they give birth. The aim behind this is to energise and revitalise the mother's weakened body and at the same time to stimulate the milk hormones and increase the levels of mother's milk essential to the new-born baby.

In addition, loss of blood during birth leads to a fall in body sugar levels. Dates are important from the point of view of enabling sugar to enter the body and prevent blood pressure from dropping. Their high calorific value strengthens people weakened by illness or suffering from extreme fatigue.

These facts reveal the wisdom in the way that Allah recommended Maryam to eat dates, designed to energise and invigorate the woman and ensure the emergence of milk, the only food for a baby. For example, the date contains more than ten elements of vital importance if the body is to remain healthy and energetic. Modern-day scientists state that human beings can actually live for years on nothing more than dates and water. V. H. W. Dowson, a recognised expert in this field, says that one grain of date and a glass of milk are enough to meet all of a person's daily nutritional requirements.

The substance oxytocin, which is present in the date, is used in modern medicine to facilitate birth. In fact, oxytocin means "rapid birth." It is also known to increase levels of mother's milk after birth.

Oxytocin is actually a hormone released by the pituitary gland which stimulates contractions of the womb during childbirth. All the pre-birth preparations in the body take place thanks to this hormone. The effects of the hormone can be seen in the muscles that form the mother's womb and in cells in the muscular structure that enables the secretion of mother's milk. The effective contraction of the womb is essential if birth is to take place. Oxytocin enables the muscles that comprise the womb to contract in a very powerful manner. Moreover, oxytocin also initiates the secretion of mother's milk. This feature of the date alone-the way it contains oxytocin-is important evidence that the Qur'an is the revelation of Allah. The medical identification of the benefits of the date only became possible in recent times. Yet it was set out fourteen centuries ago in the Qur'an that Allah revealed to Maryam that she should eat dates.

Dates also contain a form of sugar that gives the body high levels of mobility and heat energy and which can be easily broken down in the body. Furthermore, this sugar is not glucose, which rapidly raises the level of blood sugar but the fruit sugar fructose. A rapid rise in blood sugar levels in diabetics in particular has a damaging effect on a great many organs and systems, especially the eyes, kidneys, heart and circulatory system and nervous system. High blood sugar is one of the main causes of disorders as serious as loss of sight, heart attacks and kidney insufficiency.

Dates contain a great many vitamins and minerals. They are very rich in fibre, fat and proteins. They also contain sodium, potassium, calcium, magnesium, iron, sulphur, phosphorus and chlorine, as well as vitamins A, beta-carotene, B1, B2, B3 and B6. Some of the benefits of the vitamins and minerals in dates to the normal human body and especially during pregnancy can be summarised as follows:

The nutritional value of dates stems from the appropriate mineral balance within them. The date also contains folic acid, a B vitamin of great importance to pregnant women. Folic acid (B9) is a vitamin which serves important functions in the construction of new blood cells and of amino acids, the body's building blocks, and in cell renewal. The need for folic acid thus rises significantly during pregnancy and the daily requirement doubles. When folic acid levels are insufficient, red blood cells that are larger than normal but with lower functionality emerge, along with the symptoms of anaemia, appear. Folic acid plays a particularly important role in cell division and in the formation of the genetic structure of the cell and is the only substance daily requirements of which double during pregnancy. The date is exceedingly rich in folic acid.
On the other hand, the long-term nausea and physical reactions that appear during pregnancy do so because of a lack of potassium. Levels therefore need to be reinforced. In the same way that the large quantities of potassium in dates are of great importance in this regard, they are also important in regulating the water balance in the body. Moreover, by helping oxygen to reach the brain potassium enables one to think clearly. In addition, it provides the appropriate alkaloidal features for body fluids and stimulates the kidneys to expel toxic bodily wastes. It helps bring down high blood pressure and the formation of healthy skin.113
The iron contained in dates controls the synthesis of haemoglobin in the red blood cells and ensures an appropriate level of red cells in the blood. This is of vital importance in preventing anaemia during pregnancy and the development of the baby. Red blood cells play a role in keeping cells alive by carrying oxygen and carbon dioxide in the blood. Due to dates' high iron levels, a human being can meet his or her iron requirements by eating just 15 dates a day and will thus be protected from disorders arising from iron deficiency.
The calcium and phosphate in dates are important elements for skeletal growth and balancing the body's bone structure. The high levels of phosphorus andcalcium in dates protect the body against bone weakness and help reduce such disorders.
Scientists also emphasise the way in which dates reduce stress and tension. Research by Berkeley University experts has revealed that dates contain high levels of vitamin B6, which strengthens the nerves, and magnesium, which is very important for the kidneys. A person can meet his magnesium requirement by eating just 2-3 grains of date a day. The vitamin B1 in dates facilitates the health of the nervous system, assists the transformation of the carbohydrates in the body into energy and the use of protein and fats to meet the body's needs. Vitamin B2assists in the burning of protein, carbohydrates and fats for the provision of bodily energy and cell renewal. The body's vitamin A requirement rises during pregnancy. Thanks to the vitamin A it contains, the date improves vision and bodily resistance and strengthens the teeth and bones. Dates are also especially rich in beta-carotene. Beta-carotene helps prevent cancer by controlling molecules that attack the cells.

In addition, unlike dates, other fruits are generally lacking in protein. Thanks to this feature, dates enable the body to protect itself against illness and infection, to renew cells and ensure fluid balance. Meat is also a useful foodstuff but maybe not as much as the date, which is a fresh fruit, especially at such a time. Indeed, excessive consumption of meat during pregnancy can actually lead to toxicity in the body. It is much better for pregnant women to choose fruit and vegetables, which are light and easily digested.

All these facts about dates reveal Allah's infinite knowledge and compassion for human beings. As we have seen, the benefits of the date, especially during pregnancy and only recently established by modern medical science, were indicated in the Qur'an many years ago.

THE SECRET BLESSING OF EATING POMEGRANATE

The pomegranate has been mentioned in the Quran in three places:

It is HE Who sends down rain from the skies; with it WE produce vegetation of all kinds: from some WE produce green (crops), out of which WE produce grain, heaped up (at harvest); out of the date palm and its sheaths (or spathes) (come) clusters of dates hanging low and near: and (then there are) gardens of grapes, and olives, and pomegranates, each similar (in kind) yet different (in variety): when they begin to bear fruit, feast your eyes with the fruit and the ripeness thereof. Behold! in these things there are Signs for people who believe. (Al-Aníaam - 99)

It is HE Who produceth gardens, with trellises and without, and dates, and tilth with produce of all kinds, and olives and pomegranates, similar (in kind) and different (in variety): eat of their fruit in their season, but render the dues that are proper on the day that the harvest is gathered. But waste not by excess: for ALLAH loveth not the wasters. (Al-Aníaam - 141)

In them will be Fruits, and dates, and pomegranates: Then which of the favors of your Lord will you deny? (Ar-Rahman - 68-69).

There are also hadith that mention the fruit:

Anas bin Malik (Radhiyallahu anhu) narrated that Rasulullah (sallallahu alaiyhi wassallam) said, "There is not a pomegranate which does not have a pip from one of the pomegranate of the Garden (of Jannah) in it." (Abu Nu'aim)

Rasulullah(sallallahu alaiyhi wassallam) said, "Pomegranate and its rind strengthen digestion(stomach)." (narrated Ali(radhiyallahu anhu), Abu Nuaim, Al-Jozi)

11 Health Benefits of Pomegranate Juice

Several recent studies have shown significant potential health benefits from drinking pomegranate juice. Here are eleven:

1.Fights Breast Cancer
Studies in Israel show that pomegranate juice destroys breast cancer cells while leaving healthy cells alone. It may also prevent breast cancer cells from forming.

2.Lung Cancer Prevention
Studies in mice show that pomegranate juice may inhibit the development of lung cancer.

3.Slows Prostate Cancer
It slowed the growth of prostate cancer in mice.

4. Keeps PSA Levels Stable
In a study of 50 men who had undergone treatment for prostate cancer, 8 ounces of pomegranate juice per day kept PSA levels stable, reducing the need for further treatment such as chemotherapy or hormone therapy.

5. Protects the Neonatal Brain
Studies show that maternal consumption of pomegranate juice may protect the neonatal brain from damage after injury.

6. Prevention of Osteoarthritis
Several studies indicate that pomegranate juice may prevent cartilage deterioration.

7. Protects the Arteries
It prevents plaque from building up in the arteries and may reverse previous plaque buildup.

8. Alzheimer's Disease Prevention
It may prevent and slow Alzheimer's disease. In one study, mice bred to develop Alzheimer's disease were given pomegranate juice. They accumulated significantly less amyloid plaque than control mice and they performed mental tasks better.

9. Lowers Cholesterol
It lowers LDL (bad cholesterol) and raises HDL (good cholesterol).

10. Lowers Blood Pressure
One study showed that drinking 1.7 ounces of pomegranate juice per day lowered systolic blood pressure by as much as 5 percent.

11. Dental Protection
Research suggests that drinking pomegranate juice may be a natural way to prevent dental plaque.

Other Health Benefits - Pomegranate

The Pomegranate has been touted as a superfruit due to its amazing health properties. This is because Pomegranates are rich in Potassium, folic acid, Vitamins (rich in Vitamin C) and Antioxidants called polyphenols (some studies suggest that they contain 3 times more antioxidants than red wine or green tea).

Antioxidants are chemical substances which help in the prevention of cellular damage (said to be a common pathway for cancer, heart problems, aging, and a variety of diseases) and are the main reason for the big obsession.

Much research has been done to show that Pomegranates may be able to reduce blood pressure, LDL cholesterol build up and even slow down prostate cancer.

There are Three references of the Pomegranate in the Qur'an under the name of Rumman (its Qur'anic name).

The references can be found in;

"We bring forth the green blade from, which we bring forth the thick clustered grain; and from the date palm, from the pollen thereof, spring pendant bunches; and (We bring forth) gardens of grapes, and the olive and the pomegranate, alike and unlike."[Surah vi,Verse 99]

"He it is Who produceth gardens trellised and untrellised, and the date palm, and crops of divers flavor, and the olive and the pomegranate , like and unlike. "Surah vi,Verse 141]

"Wherein is fruit, the date palm and pomegranate .Which is it, of the favors of your Lord, that ye deny?" [Surah LV ,Verse 68]

There are also a number of hadith on the Pomegranate;

"There is not a pomegranate which does not have a pip from one of the pomegranate of the Garden(of Jannah) in it."[Abu Nu'aim]

"Pomegranate and its rind strengthen digestion (stomach)."
[narrated Ali(radhiyallahu anhu), Abu Nuaim, Al-Jozi]

A pip of Jannah - Benefits of Pomegranate Juice

Some research has also evaluated the antioxidant nature of pomegranate juice and its usefulness in fighting certain forms of cancer.

Pomegranate juice has been tentatively shown to reduce incidence of breast and skin cancer. It has also been tested and shown to slow the growth of prostate cancer in mice.

Another interesting study has evaluated pomegranate juice and osteoarthritis. Pomegranate juice tends to act as an inhibitor on enzymes responsible for damaging cartilage.

These studies applied extract of pomegranate directly onto damaged cartilage. More research would have to examine a cause and effect relationship between oral ingestion of pomegranate juice and reduction in cartilage deterioration.
